WinterFest Weekend is a family-oriented holiday event that celebrates winter in Los Alamos, New Mexico. While a number of businesses and organizations host events including the North Pole Workshop and Breakfast with Santa, this year is going to be a bit different.  

While WinterFest 2020 takes place Dec. 4-6, activities will be posted throughout the month of December - be sure to check out our "Other Activities & Ideas" section!

Friday, December 4, 2020

Winter Wonderland Virtual Paint

Los Alamos Canvas Events - Virtual Session | 6 p.m.

Plan a cozy paint party at your home. Join the Zoom (offered Friday, 12/4 at 6 p.m. or Saturday, 12/5 at 1 p.m.) or paint on your own.

Winter Wonderland Painting Kit includes:

  • ZOOM PAINT CLASS

  • A 12”x16” Canvas Board with pencil drawn image

  • Tempera paint cups

  • Black sharpie

  • Plate for mixing

  • Q-tips

What you need to supply:

Newspaper, paint brush (one size 10 or 12 round brush), container for water, paper towels and plastic mixing tray (optional)

Throughout November & December:

Home Delivery available for an added fee, or convenient curbside pick up Tuesdays 4:30-5:30 p.m. at White Rock Library Parking Lot  and Wednesdays 4:30-5:30 p.m. at the Fuller Lodge Art Center Parking Lot.

The Night Sky in December

Los Alamos Nature Center - Livestreamed Event | 7 p.m.

Join Paul Arendt for this live-streamed astronomy talk to learn what you can see in the night sky during the month of December, including constellations, conjunctions, and the Geminid and Ursid meteor showers! This talk is perfect for beginning stargazers who want to learn more. In keeping with WinterFest’s “Home for the Holidays” theme, the show will end with short presentations from Akkana Peck and Paul on gift options (e.g. trade offs, price points) for telescopes and binoculars.

Wreath Sale at Fuller Lodge Art Center

Fuller Lodge Art Center | 10 a.m. Until Sold Out

A limited number of wreaths will be available in the courtyard of Fuller Lodge Art Center. Wreaths are $25, and can be purchased with EXACT change, or a check made out to Troop 71. Sales begin at 10 a.m, and will end when all wreaths are gone. Physical Distancing of 6 Feet will be enforced. Come support our Scouts!

Tis' the season to make a few sustainable changes to your holiday traditions! Do you have some burning questions about reducing holiday waste? Or maybe you're curious about recyclable or reusable alternatives to use in your everyday life. Join PEEC staff members Kristen O'Hara and Elizabeth Watts for an interactive event to discuss some steps we can take to develop more sustainable practices this holiday season and beyond! Ugly Sweater Mask Decorating Contest

Ugly Sweater Mask Decorating Contest

The Los Alamos Creative District is hosting a WinterFest "Ugly Holiday Sweater" Face Mask Decorating Contest, and giving away cloth face masks that will serve as blank canvases for creativity. It is free to participate, and awards will be given out to the top three winners in the three categories. 

Artists must use the mask provided, which may be picked up at Nambe Drugs (111 Central Park Square) from 9:00a-6:00p Mon-Fri (except Thanksgiving), Nov 25 - Dec 4 (or until our mask supply runs out). Decorated masks must be submitted via email by 10:00p on Dec 5, and winners will be announced by 2:00pm on Dec 6. 

 

"Ugly Holiday Sweater" Mask Categories:

Adult (age 18+)

Teen (age 13-17)

Youth (12 & Under)

 

Prizes for each category:

Gift card to Village Arts

1st - $30

2nd - $20

3rd - $10

Rules: 

  • Masks need to be decorated within the theme of "Ugly Holiday Sweater"

  • Must use the face mask provided by the Creative District

  • Only 1 submission per person

  • If your family has multiple contestants, please separate those into multiple emails to send to me.

  • Two clear photos of the mask must be emailed to jeremy@losalamos.org (one closeup of the mask, with the entire mask visible) and another photo of someone wearing it (does not have to be the artist).

  • Due by 10:00pm on Dec 5.

  • Email must include: Name and age of artist, 2 photos as noted above, and contact phone number of artist (or parent of artist, if under 18)

Library Conversations: Winter Music

Thursday, December 3 at 7:00 p.m.

A short indulgence in warmth for the bleak midwinter. Featured performers are Simple Truth Duet out of Albuquerque. They are a duet band that does jazz, jazz/pop standards, and original tunes. Carla Van Blake and Steve Terwilliger may be also be found starting December 6th performing uplifting secular and non-secular music at Inspirational First Sundays.

Holiday Scavenger Hunt

Dec. 4-16 participate in the Community Scavenger Hunt! Anyone completing a row or more can collect their prize at the Aquatic Center on Dec. 17th and 18th. This is an honor system - so just mark off what you find (no photos/proof needed).

Los Alamos Community Winds (LACW) Annual Holiday Prism Concert - Virtual

The event will feature a series of performances by member of the community including: The Los Alamos Flute Choir, The Covid Clarinets, The SaxAtomix, The LACW Brass, and individual solo performances by flautists Heidi Morning and Tracey Speyrer and LACW director/trombonist Ted Vives, all accompanied by pianist Julian Chen.

The concert will be free for viewing, but LACW would request that anyone planning to watch the concert register with EventBrite:

Freedom Church Los Alamos Virtual “12 Days of Christmas in Los Alamos”

The event will include daily contests, fun activities for the entire family, activities for kids, Facebook livestreams with messages of hope, and plenty more. During the 12 days Freedom Church will be giving away at least $10k to Los Alamos families as well as contest winners all while supporting local small businesses and non-profits. Everything will take place inside the Facebook Event “Christmas in Los Alamos 2020!”

Pictures with Santa Claus, presented by the Blue Window Bistro

Get pictures taken with Santa Dec. 21, 22 and 23 from 3 to 7 PM. Everything is outdoors in order to be covid-compliant. Reservation only to avoid gathering and mingling. Santa will be wearing a mask, children will be sitting in front of him on a small chair or bench or popping out of a present, whichever works best for the child and family. Everything will be sanitized  in between uses. 

Children will get a hot cocoa and a goodie bag with Christmas crafts and cookies to take home. A digital copy of the pictures will be sent to parents.

A thoughtful community member curated a map of holiday decorations in Los Alamos and White Rock!

If you're looking for something COVID-safe to do with the kiddos, take a drive around town!

The map shows where all the lights are, and has a simple ranking system to differentiate small displays from really big ones. Pack up the kids and go see some lights, as some of them are truly amazing!

Dance Arts Los Alamos Online Gift Shop

Dance Arts Los Alamos won't be performing on stage this holiday season, but they are still bringing some Nutcracker cheer! The DALA Holiday Gift Shop is open online through January 2, 2021. The gift shop features the Nutcracker themed items you can usually find at our Nutcracker gift shop at the Duane Smith Auditorium during Los Alamos WinterFest Weekend. Decorated Tree House at Los Alamos Nature Center

This year, PEEC staff members are going to decorate the tree house at the Los Alamos Nature Center with solar lights! Stop by to see this energy efficient display this holiday season! PEEC hopes to have it up before December 4 to celebrate WinterFest.
