WinterFest in Los Alamos, New Mexico

WinterFest Weekend is a family-oriented holiday event that celebrates winter in Los Alamos, New Mexico. A number of businesses and organizations host events including the North Pole Workshop and Breakfast with Santa. The Fuller Lodge Open House and the Earth Treasure Show always draw crowds. Don’t miss Affordable Arts at the Fuller Lodge Art Center for great holiday gifts!

The highlights of the weekend are the MainStreet Holiday Lights Parade and the Tree Lighting at Ashley Pond.

WinterFest gives families in Los Alamos an abundance of things to do all weekend long and brings people into the downtown. 

Enter the Holiday Lights Parade

Would you like to enter the parade? The Holiday Lights Parade glides down Central Avenue on Saturday, Dec. 5. The 2020 theme is “Toyland on the Mesa.” Registration for the 2020 parade is available HERE; the deadline to participate is Friday, Nov. 27, 2020.

Affordable Arts 2019

Fuller Lodge Arts Center | 10am-4pm

It’s a tradition! In the season of gift giving, Fuller Lodge Art Center aims to present the community with unique, quality artwork at affordable prices. The Portal Gallery will be featuring local artist, Elizabeth Brosha at this time. The shows will run from November 29, 2019 until January 4, 2020.

 

 

 

26th Annual Creche Show

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 1967 18th St. | 1-7pm

Each year, the Annual Creche Show offers an open house for all community members to display and view nativity scenes from around the world. There are typically upwards of 500 creches on display. This special event is free of charge, and refreshments will be served.

Those interested in dropping off a nativity set for display should do so Friday, Dec. 6 from 7am-Noon; pick-up is on Saturday, Dec. 7 from 4-5pm. 

 

 

 

Winter Exhibition Opening

The Karen Wray Gallery | 4-6pm 

        Open 10am-4pm on Saturday; closed Sunday

Winter Wine Bottle Paint Night

Pig & Fig Cafe, White Rock | 6pm 

Create a wonderful whimsical winter scene on a wine bottle. $35 + tax fee includes all materials and the battery-powered cork with light string to insert into bottle. Register at www.LACanvasEvents.com/shop-1. 

 

 

 

Sangre de Cristo Chorale Concert

United Church | 7pm

A Celebration of Women: From poets to music to subject matter, women are at the center of this holiday concert.  They are especially excited to premier a three-movement commissioned work by composer Traci Mendel. The Sangre de Cristo Chorale has been performing in Los Alamos for over 41 years. Tickets can be purchased at the door or online at https://www.sdcchorale.org/.

 

 

 

The Nutcracker “On The Hill”

Duane Smith Auditorium | 7pm

The Nutcracker is an annual tradition in Classical Ballet; The Nutcracker “on the Hill” takes it a step further. Be part of the story of Los Alamos, Christmas 1944. Dance Arts Los Alamos is very excited to bring this show back to Los Alamos.

December Night Sky Show

Los Alamos Nature Center Planetarium | 7pm

15th Annual Children’s Christmas Bazaar

Trinity on the Hill Episcopal Church | 8:30am-12pm

Children in kindergarten through 6th grade shop for family and friends on their own. Items are reasonably priced, elves are available for children who may need or want help, purchases may be gift wrapped and proceeds go to charity. This is a children’s event for our community. Parents are encouraged to enjoy coffee and treats while they wait for their children. Activities are available for children too young to shop and young people too old to shop are encouraged to help with this event. Children are encouraged to bring a shopping bag and parents are encouraged to bring their own coffee cup.

Los Alamos “Little Shops” Vending
The Family YMCA Gym,  | 9am-4pm

Come buy holiday gifts from local merchants in a festively decorated gym, with live music. 

Vendors, food trucks, and singers may register by completing this registration form and taking it to the YMCA, or stop by the Y to register. Or, you may also register on-line here.

 

Ultimate Parent/Child Gingerbread House Class

American Legion Post 90, 1325 Trinity Dr. | 9am-4pm

Hosted by Chantielle Hanson of Borrow A Baker and Jennifer Martinez of Pampered Chef, this class will take part in two sessions (morning and afternoon). At the end of the class participants will leave with a fully decorated gingerbread house and the molds and recipes to make their own gingerbread houses in the future. The class is limited to 16 parent/child pairs; recommended minimum age is 4). The class is $40 and advance registration is required. Childrens’ Craft Fair 
Los Alamos STEAM Lab, 1615 Central Ave., Suite 202 | 1-3pm

This is a chance for your crafty child to show off their amazing creations! Each child, with a $5 entry, will get half of a 6″ folding table to display their wares. Parents can advise and help as needed, but creations should largely be the work of the child. No food, please. The last 30 minutes of the fair will include “trading time” where kiddos are encouraged to go trade their remaining stock with their fellow vendors. Fun free event for children and families, including photos with Santa, crafts, cookie decorating, letters to Santa and a large 5-foot plush bear! 

 

 

Lighting of the Holiday Tree 
Municipal Building Lobby | 5-6pm 

Join the County Council for this family-friendly annual event as they “light up” the holiday tree in the main lobby of the Municipal Building. Doors open at 5pm and the tree lighting countdown takes place at 5:30pm.  Enjoy mingling around the tree with holiday music, free hot cocoa and cookies! In addition to photos with the tree, there will be an opportunity to take a selfie photo with a WinterFest-themed backdrop and props. Doors close at 6pm as everyone departs to watch the parade.

Meet at the Los Alamos Nature Center | 9:30am – 2pm 

Celebrate winter and join Jean Dewart for a snowshoe outing! Registration is required at peecnature.org. Admission: $5 per person and $10 per family. $4 per person and $8 per family for PEEC and Los Alamos Mountaineer members.

Other Holiday Events

 

Sunday, Dec. 15 

North Mesa Stables Luminaria Walk, 4:00-7:00 p.m., North Mesa Stables

What You’ll Experience: Quiet walk through Stables Open House, camp fires (“luminarias”), opportunities to interact with horses, goats, sheep, cows, and other stable animals at select barns.
What to Bring: Please wear glow sticks, carry flashlights, reflective clothing; Los Alamos Stable Owners Association will also be collecting canned food to benefit LA Cares at the Luminaria Walk.

Park and Walk – Park in lot across from the Sheriff’s Posse; enter through the Main Entrance. Food donation will be collected at the Main Entrance.

Tuesday, Dec. 24 

Christmas in Los Alamos” Candlelight Service by Freedom Church,

4:45-5:30 p.m., Ashley Pond

Christmas music/carols, photo station, hot chocolate and candlelights. Kids game and prizes and more. Hosted by Freedom Church. More information at www.ChristmasInLosAlamos.com.
