Scarecrow Contest on Central
"Movie Monsters" Take Over MainStreet. The Scarecrow Contest will take place along Central Ave. Saturday, Oct. 10-Sunday, Nov.1 in downtown Los Alamos. Applications can be found HERE and more details are available on the Los Alamos Arts Council website.

Virtual Pet Costume Photo Contest
Monster Mutts & More. Los Alamos Creative District, Los Alamos MainStreet and Pet Pangaea are hosting a Virtual Pet Costume Photo Contest for 2020 – complete with prizes for the cutest & most clever costumed pup (or cat, or chicken, or goat … or whatever furry friend you decide to dress up)! From Oct. 29 - Oct. 31 (at noon) share your photos publicly using the two hashtags: #LosAlamosPetCostume and #PetPangaea, or email photos to jeremy@losalamos.org. Prizes will be awarded by a judging panel on Halloween, Oct. 31.

Pumpkin Carving Demonstration
Tuesday, Oct. 27, 7-8 PM
Join Lori Dauelsberg and Lisa Lloyd for a free pumpkin carving demo, organized by the Los Alamos Arts Council! They will be demonstrating the artful, artistic carving of pumpkins that they have done over the years. Please tune in to get some great tips, ideas and ask questions, then get busy carving pumpkins!
Monster (Face) Masks Design Contest
Create your own Monster Face Mask! The Los Alamos Creative District is giving away cloth facemasks for you to decorate in this year's Halloweekend theme "Monsters Take Over Mainstreet." Participants will have until Oct 29 to design, decorate, and enter their creation into the contest. Top three winners in each category (adult, teen, youth, and kids) will receive gift cards to Village Arts. For more information and contest details, go to the Creative District website.
Trick-or-Trot: Virtual 5K Run & Walk
Barranca Elementary School PTO is sponsoring a new virtual event, with participants running Oct. 24-31. Proceeds from registration (which includes a t-shirt) will help fund playground equipment. Paper Circuit Pumpkins
Starting Monday, Oct. 5 - Pickup on a first-come basis
Los Alamos STEAM Lab and Family Strengths Network are collaborating on FSN's Adventure in STEM series to bring you Paper Circuit Jack 'O Lanterns. Movie Monster - LIVE Animation Drawings
Learn how to create digital versions of Movie Monsters with animator David Dunn on Instagram @dbldowndunn (or click HERE to pull it up on a browser). Formerly part of LANL's Visible Team, he now runs his own shop, David Dunn Art & Animation, in Boston, MA, where he creates animation and motion graphics, and provides visual development services. For fun, he also conducts weekly live drawing sessions, Tuesday Night Live, on Instagram. He is dedicating the October 20 and 27 session to Los Alamos MainStreet's Halloweekend, drawing Movie Monsters LIVE, talking about the software, techniques and tricks of the trade for creating digital characters, and answering questions posted by participants during the session. Monster Paint Party
Plan a Ghoulish Family Paint Night at home this Halloween. Los Alamos Canvas Events will have three different monster painting kits available to paint during Halloween. Find the 10 monsters hiding in the windows of the MainStreet District along Central Ave. Snap selfies with them and post online using the hashtag #MonstersOnMainStLA or submit the photos to mainstreet@losalamos.org for a chance to win a "monster" bags of treats (home delivery or pickup available for the winners)!
Families will also have an opportunity to win a free Sonic blast by solving a Mystery Phrase, courtesy of Freedom Church Los Alamos. Text the phase during the days of the Monster Hunt event to win. **One Sonic blast per family; Phrase must be submitted Oct. 29-31. Winning form (Sonic info) may be submitted 24 hours after the event ends. Gift cards will be sent to winning recipients with 24-48 hours of submission.

If you register for the Monster Paint Party, held Thursday, Oct. 29 at 6 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 31 at 1 p.m., you may also pick up the kits at this Market. Masks are required.

Bring your carved pumpkins to a Los Alamos Arts Council booth on Central Ave. (near Bennett's Jewelry) for display. Pumpkins will be "dark" this year and not lit, but residents can view them by the scarecrows and near select business in the MainStreet district and in Central Park Square.
5:30 p.m. - Virtual High-Tech Halloween at the Bradbury

7 p.m. - Myths About Black Holes
Deep in the core of the Milky Way, a monster lurks, consuming all that crosses its path. It's Sagittarius A*, the supermassive black hole! In this family-friendly Halloween special, astrophysicist Jonah Miller will talk about black holes throughout the universe: covering their history, how we see them, and what we can learn from them. Along the way, he'll debunk common myths about black holes and describe some of their fascinating properties.
7 p.m. - Halloween Drive-in Movie: "Hocus Pocus"
Join Los Alamos MainStreet, Los Alamos Creative District, Los Alamos County Recreation and Central Park Square for a night of spooky thrills in this classic, family-friendly 1993 Disney film featuring a trio of diabolical witches! This is a free event, but registration is required and will open at 2 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 26. Cars can enter the parking lot beginning at 5:30 p.m.
